On Saturday, the Lions traveled to St. Joseph Illinois to compete in the Spartan Classic.
The Spartan Classic offered a different challenge from a traditional race. The 3-mile course runs almost entirely along the paved streets of St. Joseph, with runners finishing their final 400 meters on the St. Joe track. With it being a road race, the course is almost entirely flat with the exception of a downhill start. Due to the Spartan classic being such a fast-paced and aggressive race, it is common for a lot of runners to PR at this meet.
For the boys, senior Steven Hendrixson led Marshall, finishing 66th overall with a time of 17:04.00. Senior Thomas Weber followed in 99th at 17:32.45. The two seniors were the Lions' top two finishers and finished less than 30 seconds apart.
Sophomore Bricyn Cassagne finished 131st overall with a time of 18:43.29. Freshman Henry Arthur came in 134th at 18:53.16, while sophomore Jacob Weber finished 136th in 18:53.69. The three runners finished within just over 10 seconds of one another.
Sophomore Charlie Fox finished 143rd overall with a time of 19:21.98, while junior Cooper Crumrin rounded out the Marshall lineup in 179th at 22:18.19.
The Lions finished 21st out of a competitive field of 32 teams with a combined score of 522 points. The Lions' average time was 18:13.32.
On the girls’ side, Marshall was led by senior Madeleine Fox, who finished 8th overall with a time of 18:11.04, averaging a 6:04 mile pace. Fox was followed closely by her teammate, sophomore Grace Thompson, who placed 13th in 18:20.44.
Junior Addie Nave was the third Marshall runner to cross the finish line, placing 37th with a time of 20:20.18. Senior Myah Boyd finished 63rd in 21:24.50, while freshman Olivia Moseley rounded out Marshall's top five with a 103rd-place finish in 23:45.01.
The Squad showed a strong effort against a large field of competitors, with the Lady Lions placing 7th out of 29 teams with a low score of 224 points.
Marshall will look to continue building on its performance as the season progresses.
The Lions will travel to Robinson next week on Thursday to take part in the Cork Classic.
