On Friday afternoon the Marshall Lions made their way up to the Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg area to take on the Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Hatchets. It was a closely contested pitcher’s duel throughout the contest, with Payton McGuire and Branson Tingley of the Hatchets firing off many scoreless outings.
The game would see Stew-Stras get a run in the bottom of the fourth and Marshall get a run in the top of the sixth on a home run from Garrett Pugh, his seventh of the season. It would be 1-1 after the seventh going to the eighth. And in the extra frame the Hatchets had just a bit more in the tank, getting one more run across for a walk-off defeat of Marshall by the final of 2-1.
As stated before, McGuire made his first start on the mound of the season and looked every bit as sharp as he’s ever been before the injury he sustained late in the basketball season. He lasted for 6 2/3 innings, didn’t give up a single earned run and struck out 11. The Lions will be back at home on Wednesday to play host to the Cumberland Pirates.
