The Marshall High School softball team traveled on the road to Flora on Saturday, March 21st to play the Flora High School Wolfgals in a non-conference game on a picturesque and sunny day in Clay County. Marshall came into the contest with a record of 1-0, while Flora came in with a record of 0-1.
The story of the game was pitching. Marshall’s Kyla Gustafson, making her first start in the circle this season, pitched her way into the Marshall High School softball record book. In a game lasting 9 innings, Gustafson recorded a school-record 22 strikeouts during a complete-game, extra innings win. Gus gave up just one unearned run, three hits, and no walks to go along with her 22 K’s. Of their 27 outs throughout the contest, Flora registered just five outs which came in ways other than via a strikeout. The dominating pitching performance kept the Lions in a nailbiter until the Big Red got a boost in the top of the 9th inning from junior catcher Klaire York, who smashed a deep homerun to straightaway centerfield to break a 1-1 tie. In the bottom of the inning, Gustafson closed the door by ending the game with her 22nd strikeout to beat Flora by the score of 2-1.
Facing the Lions for Flora was senior pitcher Halle Kitley, who is committed to play Division 1 softball next year at the University of Southern Indiana as a pitcher. With an expected duel in the circle for the second straight game for the Lions, after they defeated Oakwood 2-1 in their first game of the season, Marshall knew they were in for another battle on the diamond early in the 2026 campaign.
The Lions manufactured a run in the top of the first. Lynn Welborn led off the game by smacking a single to left field. Lauren English then came up to the plate and sacrifice bunted to advance Welborn, who ran around second base and sprinted into third. McKenzie Davis then came up to bat with one out and brought Welborn home for Marshall to take a 1-0 lead. The lead held up until the bottom of the third when Flora scored an unearned run to tie the game at 1.
Inning by inning thereafter, the Lions and the Wolfgals went scoreless the rest of the way through the regulation 7 innings, so the teams went to extra innings, each looking to get the win. In the top of the 9th, Marshall junior Klaire York hit a long drive on a 2 ball, 1 strike count over the fence in straightaway centerfield for the go-ahead run, putting the Lions on top 2-1.
In the bottom of the 9th and clinging to a 2-1 lead, Kyla Gustafson shut the door with a strikeout to end the game, giving Marshall a 2-1 win over a solid Flora team.
Lynn Welborn had two hits, three stolen bases, and scored a run. Klaire York hit a huge homerun in the top of the 9th to break the 1-1 tie. Ella Mattas, Avery Cornwell, and Kyla Gustafson each collected the other base hits for Marshall, while McKenzie Davis drove in a run.
After the game, both squads' substitute players played one another in an abbreviated contest. Marshall's Mollie Kent went the distance, striking out six Flora hitters in the Lions' 7-2 win. Katelyn McNeely smashed a home run in the game, and Raegyn Kent had two hits to lead the Lions.
After the game, Marshall head coach Ryan McGuire has this to say: “In my five years as high school softball coach, I have not seen such a dominating pitching performance than I did today. I have been witness to no-hitters, and I have seen remarkable performances inside the circle by our pitchers over the years, but the 22-strikeout performance by Kyla Gustafson against a very solid Flora team with a D-1 pitcher going against us defensively, we have a chance to compete each game. In the reserves game, Mollie Kent showed vastly improved pitching skills, so that will help us when we have multiple games in a week. Until our bats come around, we are going to experience games like the past two where it’s 2-1. I told the girls before the game that they are going to get every opponent’s best effort against us this year, and we need to manufacture runs and do the little things it takes to win. Klaire York played a marvelous game behind the plate and hit a huge home run to break the tie in the 9th to win the game. Lynn Welborn looked more comfortable at the plate, and she was back to creating havoc on the base paths with three steals. Once we all relax at the dish and hit the ball like I know we can hit, we will be just fine. Last year, we waited most games for the big inning where we would score in bunches to put the game away. This year, we may have to grind it out and win the close ones. Our two regional games last year were both 1-0 wins, so this team has experience in tight ballgames. Once we have a breakout game and win the game by the run rule, we will stay focused and play fundamentally sound softball. When we hit our stride, we can become a dangerous opponent. We’re now on to Georgetown Tuesday to begin a week where we play five games in four days and see where we stand against good competition (including an undefeated Hutsonville-Palestine team Thursday in the Lions’ first home game, Friday at home against Salt Fork, and Saturday in Tuscola against Class 3A powerhouse Rantoul and the host Lady Warriors in a doubleheader).”
Marshall (2-0) plays its next game this coming Tuesday (3/24) when the Lions travel to Georgetown-Ridge Farm to take on the Lady Buffaloes in a non-conference game scheduled to begin at 4:30 PM on the softball diamond located at Georgetown-Ridge Farm High School.
